PDA / Pathological Demand Avoidance

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a profile within the autistic spectrum characterised by an extreme avoidance of everyday demands and expectations, often alongside a strong need to feel in control of one’s environment. This avoidance is not about being difficult or oppositional; it is driven by high levels of anxiety and a nervous system that easily goes into threat mode. Even activities a person enjoys can feel overwhelming if they are experienced as a demand.

PDA can have a significant impact on both individuals and families. Traditional strategies such as rewards, consequences, or firm routines often do not help and can increase distress. Parents and carers may feel exhausted, misunderstood, or as though they are “walking on eggshells”, trying to reduce anxiety while still managing daily life.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be a gentle and supportive therapeutic option for people with demand avoidance, particularly if other forms of therapy have felt too pressured or overwhelming. By calming the nervous system and focusing on strengths, coping strategies, and small positive changes, my work at myhappimind can help reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation, improve sleep, and build confidence.

When working with people with PDA, I take a low-demand, compassionate approach. There is no pressure to talk or engage in any particular way, and sessions are flexible and adapted to the individual. Autonomy, choice, kindness, and understanding are built in throughout. I work at a pace that feels safe and manageable, and reasonable adjustments can always be made to session structure, length, and activities. I also offer some flexibility around appointments, which we can discuss in an introductory call, to help reduce the pressure of attending sessions.

If this sounds like you or someone you care for and you would like support or to find out more, please do get in touch. I’m very happy to have an initial conversation to explore how I might be able to help.
